Classic Buck Martinez – Interviewing ’92 Blue Jays

Thanks to @jdotdashed for finding this classic video of when the ’92 Blue Jays were going for the World Series. Buck Martinez was rocking the nice brown hair and a stache that could rival Cito Gaston and Mr. Monopoly (Travis Snider). Doesn’t Travis look like Mr. Monopoly with that ridiculous stache? All he needs is a top hat. Buck Martinez is actually pretty decent with his interviews.. I guess with age, the Buck Blunder grow in numbers. Video below, and man, don’t you miss the TSN baseball theme song???

Buck Drives Me Crazy – The Legend of José Davis

Jose Bautista + Rajai Davis

What do you get when you combine Jose Bautista and Rajai Davis?

So what would happen if we were to combine these two players above (José Bautista and Rajai Davis)??? On Tuesday, May 10th, 2010, Buck Martinez made a Buck Blunder where he said “José Davis swings at a break ball”… Clearly there is no José Davis and that Rajai Davis was up to bat in the bottom of the 10th inning. But maybe Buck was onto something. During that AB with one out, Rajai Davis singled to center field and the rest was history. With David Cooper up next (came in the middle of the game to replace Yunel Escobar), Davis stole 2nd on a pitch out play and then stole 3rd on the very next pitch, which I thought was very gutsy and risky since Cooper is a Lefty and Davis had already messed up on a suicide squeeze with Escobar. So two stolen bases later, Cooper hit a sacrifice fly to center and the game was over! With a little special effects, Rajai Davis inherits the mighty beard of José Bautista to become the legendary “José Davis”.

The Legend of Jose Davis

The Mighty Beard has been added onto Rajai to become José Davis

Next game, Davis goes 4-4 with 2 runs, 2 rbis, and 2 more stolen bases. Holy smokes, where did this come from? Davis was really struggling earlier in the season, which prompted him to be kicked down to the 9th spot, but after this Boston series, man, he has shot his batting average up .58 points. This is the table setter that we want to lead our team in the lead off spot, and it’s all thanks to Buck-o with his “José Davis call…. So with that being said.. every time someone has an epic game, we need to call him “José”. It worked for Rajai Davis, it might work for others… I just can’t wait for Buck Martinez to make another name blunder with José in the name…..

So who needs a jump start? On friday, we should call Aaron Hill or Juan Rivera.. José Hill and José Rivera…. WOW, it almost sounds like we are calling them señor.

Good luck José Davis.. may the legend grow stronger as the season continues… Make sure you maintain that mighty beard!

Buck Drives Me Crazy – The Evolution of Buck Martinez’s Hairstyle

Ace Sports a Buck Martinez Hairstyle

Ace Sports a Buck Martinez Wig which would be a great promotion one day.

Continuing our stories on “Buck Drives Me Crazy”, I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about Buck Martinez’s hairstyles and how they are not a fan. The comments and tweets about his hairstyle has prompted me to write about Buck Martinez’s hairstyle. So, let’s get it on.

Do you like Buck Martinez's hairstyle?

Now, Buck Martinez has been with the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization for a very, very long time. Joining the Blue Jays in 1981 as a player, Buck played until 1986 where he saw some of his best years as a major leaguer. Buck had the stache and the long hair look at this time and it was a pretty reasonable look for a ball player back in the 80’s. So I got no beef with that. Observe the look below.

Buck Martinez when he played for the Blue Jays

Hairstyle of Buck Martinez back when he played for the Blue Jays

So time passes along and guess what, Buck Martinez is back with the Toronto Blue Jays and he becomes the manager of the team in the early 2000s. That’s a lot of time passed by and his dark brown hair is slowly changing to a grey fox look. When Buck first started as the manager, he still had the brown hair, but when his time was about to end as the Toronto Blue Jays manager, the hair changed to grey. I guess that’s what happens to you when your team has to face the Yankees and Red Sox and never get a sniff at the playoffs. Here’s a pic of him blow a “Big League Chew” bubblegum.

Buck Martinez as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays

Buck's silver hair is starting to show

So what’s next for Buck Martinez? His love and knowledge for baseball also lead him to do broadcasting. He did some broadcasting for the Toronto Blue Jays before his managerial job, but as a colour commentator. But after he got axed as a manager, he would eventually be a part of the TBS broadcast where his hairstyle started to transform to something that we slowly started to make fun of. Looking at this picture below, it looks like he’s got some great people in the back to prepare his fair and hair because there’s no way he would ever do that on his own. He’s supporting the middle parted semi-long hair style with a long bend on the left side of his face (if you are in Buck’s view) and it doesn’t look half bad.

Buck Martinez during his TBS days

Buck Martinez sporting a parted hair look with the long bend of one side.

Which leads to current day. Buck is back with the Toronto Blue Jays broadcast team for Sportsnet and he’s the play by play man this time. Although he got the promotion from colour to play by play, I think his hair took a step down. Still supporting the parted hair look, his hair just looks awful every time he does the pre-game. Just take a look at the hairstyles at this blog post by “The Blue Jay Hunter”. It’s also funny to note that Tabby and Buck had matching shirts. That is so funny. They must have went shopping together during that road trip. Just awful!!!

So, what can we do with Buck’s hair? How can we make it better or should we just let it be and make it a promotion like @markchech suggests. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Buck Martinez Hairpiece day where the first 10,000 fans would get a hairpiece. I’m sure everyone would get one, unlike Jose Bautista bobblehead day where you had to go one and a half hours early to get one. Could you imagine the Rogers Centre crowd with silver hairpieces. That would be hilarious!!! And why not? Buck’s been with this organization for so many years, maybe it’s time we honour him. I mean we don’t even have Flashback Fridays anymore. I know Ace would love it. Just look at that hair piece he’s rocking at the top of this post!

Anyways, let me know what you think about Buck’s hair or if the Toronto Blue Jays should do a Buck Martinez hair day. Maybe if we get enough support we can make it happen! If you don’t like his current hairstyle, maybe these suggestions would be better:

Buck Martinez with a Faux Hawk

Maybe Buck Martinez should grow a David Beckham Faux Hawk

Buck Martinez with Dragon Ball Z hairstyle

Maybe Buck Martinez should grow some Dragon Ball Z hair

Buck Martinez with a Lady Gaga Hairstyle + Sunglasses

I heard Lady Gaga's hair is stylish.. Maybe Buck Martinez should try it out... Maybe not... Keep the sunglasses

Buck Martinez with a Dreadlock Hairstyle

How about a page from Manny Ramirez's book. Dreadlocks look alright on him.

FINALLY…. WHY NOT BIEBERFY BUCK MARTINEZ!!!!

Buck Martinez with a Bieber Hairstyle

Wow, that's scary looking. He almost looks like Justin Bieber...

Buck Drives Me Crazy – Edwin “En-car-na-shi-own”

So when Buck Martinez came back to broadcast in 2010, the first thing that many of us Blue Jays fans watching the Sportsnet broadcast was his pronunciation of Edwin Elpidio Encarnación. The error-prone third baseman came to Toronto from the Scott Rolen trade back in 2009, but when I watched one of the first Blue Jays games in 2010, people started noticing Buck Martinez pronouncing (Edwin) Encarnacion as En-car-na-shi-own (Thanks to danimal39 for the pronunciation text). As time went by, Buck would pronounce his name so many different times, but pretty much all the time it would sound very funny (Thanks to Anthony for the mention).

So I wonder, is Buck Martinez the only one pronouncing his name right or is everyone else wrong? Surely everyone cannot be wrong? First off, with a last name Martinez, i figured Buck had some sort of Spanish background. I checked his bio on Wikipedia, and there was no mention about his Spanish decent, but a link at the very bottom as he was listed as “American People With Spanish Decent”. So he probably has Spanish Grandparents or something and is probably not fluent in Spanish. So… with that being said, I’m pretty sure he’s pronouncing it wrong.

So, more digging was made. I tried to find people pronouncing Encarnación. I found one site that has two people pronouncing Encarnación. The link can be found by clicking here. So there are two people on this site that pronounces Encarnación, and guess what people… None of them pronounces it the way he does. This leads me to believe that all of us Blue Jays fans were right and Buck Martinez is WRONG! It’s En-car-na-see-on…

So after all this, we can only hope that he can start pronouncing baseball player’s names right starting with (Edwin) Encarnación. Frankly, i prefer that he get a few lessons from this guy below…

Finally, I leave you with this… We No Speak Encarnacion – The Blue Jay Hunter
